Omaha Awaits: Why This Ole Miss Team Believes Its Story Is Just Beginning

Ole Miss is back where every college baseball program wants to be.

Omaha.

After storming through the Lincoln Regional and sweeping Auburn in the Super Regional, the Rebels have earned a spot among the final eight teams standing and will open the College World Series against North Carolina on Friday night at Charles Schwab Field.

For a team that has spent the last month playing its best baseball of the season, the opportunity feels earned, but inside the Ole Miss clubhouse, the message isn’t about celebrating the accomplishment. It’s about finishing the job.

“We’re not just going there,” head coach Mike Bianco said, referencing the team’s mindset heading into Omaha.

“You go there to win.”

The Journey Has Been Built on Leadership

Every great postseason run has defining stars. For Ole Miss, it’s been a collection of veterans who refused to let the season end. Will Furniss, Judd Utermark, Hunter Elliott, Hayden Federico, Tristan Bissetta, and Taylor Rabe.

The names are familiar because they’ve delivered repeatedly throughout the postseason, but what makes this team different isn’t simply talent, it’s the bond inside the clubhouse.

Bianco pointed to the closeness of the roster as one of the defining characteristics of this group. Players consistently talk about one another before talking about themselves, a culture that has become a major reason Ole Miss continues to win.

“As coaches, when you talk about culture and all those different things, those things matter,” Bianco said. “It’s hard to get to those points without collectively pulling for one another and caring for one another.”

Hayden Federico’s Moment

Few plays have symbolized Ole Miss’ postseason run better than Hayden Federico’s spectacular catch against Auburn. Initially taking a poor read on the ball, Federico recovered with a leaping grab that likely saved multiple runs and preserved the Rebels’ lead.

The catch immediately became one of the defining moments of the Super Regional, but Federico’s impact extends well beyond one play. The center fielder has been one of Ole Miss’ most consistent performers throughout the postseason, delivering both offensively and defensively while helping stabilize the lineup. Looking back at the catch, Federico admitted the moment still feels surreal.

“Thank God it went in my glove,” he said.

His teammates felt the significance immediately. According to Federico, players were hugging him in the dugout as if the game had already been won.

Moments later, Will Furniss hit the home run that effectively sealed it.

Veterans Leading the Way

One theme surfaced repeatedly throughout the conversations leading into Omaha. Experience matters. Federico spoke about the importance of senior leadership, specifically highlighting players such as Furniss, Utermark and Elliott for setting the tone throughout the season.

Those veterans have experienced heartbreak before. They’ve experienced postseason disappointment, and now they’re using those lessons to help lead Ole Miss through June.

“You think back to defining moments of our season,” Federico said. “Who were the guys coming up clutch? It was those guys.”

That leadership has become one of the Rebels’ greatest strengths.

Tristan Bissetta Bought Into Something Bigger

One of the most important additions to this year’s roster arrived through the transfer portal. Tristan Bissetta came to Oxford from Clemson and immediately became one of the team’s most productive hitters. His 23 home runs have put him within striking distance of program history, but Bianco believes Bissetta’s biggest contribution isn’t measured by statistics. Instead, it’s how quickly he embraced the culture.

“He immersed himself into the team,” Bianco said. “That makes a difference in the clubhouse and in the dugout.”

Bissetta’s massive postseason home runs haven’t hurt, either.

The North Carolina Challenge

The next obstacle is significant. North Carolina enters Omaha after a dominant season and is expected to start ace pitcher Jason DeCaro, one of the nation’s top arms. The right-hander enters the College World Series with an 11-2 record and a 2.28 ERA. Bianco described the Tar Heels as a complete team.

“They do everything,” he said. “They hit, they’ve got power, they steal bases, and they pitch at a high level.”

In many ways, North Carolina mirrors Ole Miss. Both teams feature veteran leadership, possess deep pitching staffs and enter Omaha playing their best baseball of the year. That’s why many view Friday night’s opener as one of the most important games of the entire bracket.

A Program Built for Moments Like This

For Bianco, this trip represents his third College World Series appearance since 2014 and another chapter in one of the most successful coaching careers in SEC history, but this run feels different because of the path it took.

The Rebels didn’t host a regional, they had to travel and survive hostile environments, which they did.

Now, they arrive in Omaha battle-tested and confident. Ole Miss hasn’t lost a postseason game, the pitching staff is rolling, the defense is making game-saving plays, and the lineup continues to deliver when it matters most.

Not Just Happy to Be There

Three years ago, Ole Miss arrived in Omaha and left as National Champions. This team understands that history, but it isn’t interested in reliving the past. The Rebels believe they have a chance to create their own legacy. That’s why the message coming out of Auburn wasn’t about reaching the College World Series. It was about what comes next.

Ole Miss didn’t come to Omaha for the experience. The Rebels came to compete for a national championship.
