Ole Miss enters Saturday’s regular-season finale against Alabama with everything still on the table, including a potential NCAA Regional host spot.
On the latest Talk of Champions Podcast, Brad Logan and Jake Thompson broke down what the Rebels need to accomplish in Tuscaloosa and why Saturday’s matchup carries enormous postseason implications.
Coming off a dominant 9-0 win Friday night, Ole Miss improved to 15 SEC wins and positioned itself one victory away from the coveted 16-win mark many believe would lock up a postseason host site.
“Get to 16 wins,” Thompson said. “That’s the magic number historically.”
Taylor Rabe Dominates As Ole Miss Pitching Continues Surge
Friday night’s shutout victory was fueled by another elite outing from starter Taylor Rabe, who has become one of Ole Miss’ most reliable arms late in the season.
Rabe discussed how transitioning into a starting role has allowed him to better prepare each week.
“Being able to know the game plan for attacking hitters and being able to work on things in the bullpen in between starts has been huge,” Rabe said.
Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco praised Rabe’s ability to mix pitches and attack the strike zone aggressively.
“Just a ton of strikes,” Bianco said. “He made it really hard on them.”
The Rebels’ pitching staff has become one of the team’s biggest strengths entering postseason play, particularly after JP Robertson delivered three strong innings in relief Friday night that allowed closer Walker Hooks to rest completely.
“This will be the first time in over a month Hooks hasn’t pitched twice in a weekend,” Thompson said.
Austin Fawley’s Offensive Breakout Changing Ole Miss Lineup
One of the biggest storylines discussed throughout the show was catcher Austin Fawley’s offensive resurgence.
After struggling for much of SEC play, Fawley has exploded offensively over the last several weeks while continuing to provide elite defense behind the plate.
“I think just staying toward the middle of the field and caring more about what I’m doing behind the plate than at the plate has cleared my mind up,” Fawley said.
Bianco said the biggest difference has been improved plate discipline and pitch recognition.
“You can tell he’s laying off pitches out of the zone now,” Bianco said. “Early in the year he chased and got himself into bad counts.”
Fawley has also become one of the emotional leaders of the team.
“He’s one of the best defensive catchers in the country,” Ray said.
Will Furniss Remains Offensive Anchor
While other hitters have fluctuated throughout the season, first baseman Will Furniss has remained the Rebels’ most consistent offensive presence.
Thompson described Furniss as the steady force holding the lineup together during offensive slumps.
“He’s been about the only consistent hitter throughout the season,” Thompson said.
Furniss credited the team’s recent offensive surge to staying patient and continuing to trust quality at-bats.
“One hard hit is eventually going to fall or go over the fence,” Furniss said.
The first baseman also spoke emotionally about having his family travel to every series this season.
“They mean the world to me,” Furniss said of his parents.
Ole Miss’ Hosting Resume Strong Despite SEC Record Questions
Much of the conversation centered around whether Ole Miss had already done enough to host an NCAA Regional.
The Rebels entered Saturday with one of the nation’s strongest resumes analytically:
- -No. 2 overall strength of schedule
- -Top-12 RPI
- -Numerous Quad 1 wins
- -Wins almost exclusively against ranked opponents in SEC play
Still, both Logan and Thompson emphasized that Saturday’s game against Alabama likely represented the defining moment for Ole Miss’ hosting chances.
“This game today literally is the make-or-break for Ole Miss to host a regional,” Logan said while discussing comments from D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge.
If Ole Miss reaches 16 SEC wins and Georgia defeats Auburn, the Rebels would also avoid playing on Tuesday in the SEC Tournament, a massive advantage for pitching management entering Hoover.
Joel Mangrum’s Impact Continues To Show
Another major topic was the continued development of Ole Miss’ pitching staff under assistant coach Joel Mangrum.
Thompson credited Mangrum’s professional baseball background and player development experience for dramatically improving the Rebels’ overall pitching depth.
“He’s probably the best position coach on that team right now,” Thompson said.
Mangrum previously worked in the Cleveland Guardians organization and has helped multiple Ole Miss pitchers expand their arsenals while improving command and confidence.
Rebels Enter Finale With Opportunity In Front Of Them
As first pitch approaches in Tuscaloosa, the message is simple: win and likely host postseason baseball in Oxford.
“This team is absolutely glued together by Will Furniss, Judd Utermark and Hunter Elliott,” Logan said.
With Cade Townsend expected to start and Walker Hooks fully rested in the bullpen, Ole Miss enters the regular-season finale believing everything it wants remains directly in front of it.
