Ole Miss defense shows speed, upside in Week 1 win

The Ole Miss Rebels may not replicate last year’s production, but the early signs point to another strong defensive unit.

On Game Runs Deep, the week one takeaway was clear. The talent and speed are there, even if the execution is still catching up.

There were lapses. Georgia State found opportunities, including a sequence early in the game where a turnover put the defense in a tough spot. Ole Miss responded by limiting the damage, forcing a missed field goal and preventing a bigger momentum swing.

That response matters. This is a new group, and mistakes are expected. Missed tackles and breakdowns showed up at times, but the overall athleticism stood out across the field. The secondary, in particular, impressed with its ability to contribute in run support. The front also flashed potential. The defensive line showed speed and disruption, even if it did not consistently dominate. Compared to last season’s record-setting group, this unit may not reach the same statistical heights, but the upside is still significant.

Personnel turnover plays a role. Last year’s defense featured established playmakers and veteran leadership. This group is still developing its identity. The names may not be as proven yet, but the talent level suggests that could change as the season progresses.

The expectation is not perfection. The expectation is progress. If Ole Miss cleans up the mistakes and continues to develop chemistry, the defense should be strong enough to keep the team competitive in every game. That was true last season. It looks like it could be true again.
