Disappointment surrounds Ole Miss baseball following an early exit from the SEC Tournament, with hosts Ben Garrett and Brad Logan questioning whether the Rebels squandered a major opportunity to host postseason baseball in Oxford.
During the latest episode of Talk of Champions, the discussion centered on Ole Miss’ late-season collapse, including losses to Georgia, Alabama and a damaging SEC Tournament defeat to Missouri. The Rebels entered Hoover with hopes of strengthening their NCAA Tournament résumé but instead went one-and-done against the SEC’s last-place team.
“That can’t happen, man,” Logan said. “You can’t lose to the worst team in the conference.”
Garrett argued the defining moment of Ole Miss’ season may have come weeks earlier against Georgia, when the Rebels failed to close out a critical SEC series at home.
“When Ole Miss needed that knockout punch, they just couldn’t do it,” Garrett said.
The hosts emphasized that while Ole Miss is still headed to the NCAA Tournament, simply making the postseason no longer satisfies expectations surrounding the program.
“Swayze Field was built to host regionals,” Logan said. “There have not been enough regionals hosted in that facility over the last couple of years.”
Ole Miss has not hosted a Super Regional since 2009, a fact Garrett called increasingly difficult for fans to ignore given the program’s facilities, fan support and investment.
The conversation also shifted toward the long-term future of head coach Mike Bianco. While both Garrett and Logan acknowledged fan frustration, Garrett suggested the situation is more complicated than simply making a coaching change.
He pointed to the financial realities of modern college athletics, where football remains the primary revenue driver for Ole Miss athletics.
“Ole Miss fans are right, you need to be hosting regionals at Ole Miss,” Garrett said. “But it’s a more complicated conversation than just ‘go get some new blood.’”
Garrett added that while the Rebels’ 2022 national championship remains historic, the years since have felt increasingly inconsistent relative to expectations.
The episode later transitioned into football discussion, including continued fallout from comments made by former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin regarding his departure for LSU.
