John Mateer vs. Jackson Arnold sets up pivotal quarterback showdown

No. 22 Auburn faces No. 11 Oklahoma on Saturday, in a matchup that pits two SEC quarterbacks surrounded by preseason expectations.

Sooners QB John Mateer and Tigers signal-caller Jackson Arnold, who transferred from Oklahoma to Auburn in the offseason, headline what projects to be one of the more evenly matched games of the week.

Both bring similar traits. Each quarterback has shown the ability to make plays with his legs while operating effectively within the offense. That dual-threat ability sets the stage for a potential offensive shootout.

But there is a difference right now. Mateer has been more consistent as a passer.

While Arnold has made plays, he has also faced more pressure, including six sacks through the first three games of the season. Protection issues have disrupted Auburn’s rhythm at times, and that could be a factor again in this matchup.

Oklahoma may have the advantage there. If Mateer has more time to operate, his ability to push the ball downfield could tilt the game. In a matchup where both teams can score, efficiency in the passing game becomes critical.

This is not a game with a clear gap between the teams. It is close, competitive and likely to be decided by execution in key moments.

And in that scenario, the quarterback play will be the difference. Right now, that gives Oklahoma a slight edge.
