John Mateer emerges as early Heisman frontrunner after Week two

Through two weeks, the case is building for Oklahoma signal caller John Mateer as the top quarterback in college football.

On Game Runs Deep, the conversation turned to Mateer’s performance and what it means for the Oklahoma Sooners moving forward. He has delivered when it matters.

Mateer was not perfect against Michigan, but he made the plays needed to win. He finished 21 of 34 for 270 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while adding 74 rushing yards on 19 carries and two more scores on the ground. His ability to impact the game both through the air and on the ground has separated him early in the season.

That versatility stands out. In a college football landscape still searching for consistent star power at quarterback, Mateer has checked the most boxes so far. He has accounted for six touchdowns through two games and continues to show a playmaking ability that puts pressure on defenses.

It is not always clean. Mateer plays with an aggressive style that can lead to mistakes, but it also creates opportunities. That balance is part of what makes him effective. He is willing to take chances and trust his ability to make something happen.

That mindset fits at Oklahoma. With talent around him and a system that allows him to play freely, Mateer has elevated Oklahoma from a competitive team to a legitimate contender. His presence alone changes the ceiling for the Sooners this season.

There are still questions long term. As the season progresses, consistency will matter. Other quarterbacks will emerge, and the Heisman race will evolve. But right now, Mateer has put himself at the front of the conversation. And if he keeps playing this way, it may not change anytime soon.
