Has Dabo Swinney’s Transfer Portal Approach Finally Paid Off at Clemson?

This feels like a prove-it moment for Dabo Swinney and Clemson Tigers.

Heading into a marquee matchup with LSU Tigers, the conversation on Game Runs Deep centered on one big question. Has Clemson quietly rebuilt into a contender again?

Over the past few years, Swinney has taken plenty of criticism, especially for his reluctance to embrace the transfer portal. While much of college football has leaned heavily into roster turnover, Clemson has stayed committed to development and retention.

Now, that approach might be paying off. There is a growing belief that Swinney has “figured it out” again, at least for this season. The roster is loaded with talent across the board, and more importantly, it is a group that has stayed together. That continuity is something many programs simply do not have anymore.

A big reason for that is culture. Inside the program, there is a clear message to players. No matter where they stand on the depth chart, they will be taken care of and they will leave with a degree. That consistency has led to one of the strongest retention rates in college football, and it is showing up in the talent level on the field.

Still, everything comes down to the quarterback. Cade Klubnik is the key to unlocking this version of Clemson. There is real belief he has NFL upside and could be in line for a breakout season. If he delivers, this Clemson team has the pieces to make serious noise. If not, the questions surrounding Swinney and his approach are only going to get louder. That is what makes Clemson’s week one matchup with LSU so important. It is not just another early-season game. It is a measuring stick for where Clemson actually stands right now. For the first time in a while, it feels like Clemson has the roster, the continuity, and the opportunity. Now they have to prove it.
