From YouTube to game-winner: Kansei Matsuzawa’s journey is one of college football’s best stories

Not every standout performance is about rankings or playoff races.

Sometimes, it is about the journey. Hawaii kicker Kansei Matsuzawa delivered one of the most unique stories of the early season, and it goes far beyond one game.

Matsuzawa did not grow up playing football. He discovered the sport at 19 while visiting the United States from Japan. Inspired, he returned home, learned English, and taught himself how to kick by watching YouTube videos.

Matsuzawa later moved back to the U.S., attended junior college in Ohio and developed into a legitimate prospect. That path led him to the University of Hawaii. In week zero, Matsuzawa made the most of his opportunity in the Rainbow Warriors matchup against Stanford. He connected on three field goals, including the game-winner in an upset victory. It was the kind of moment that defines why stories like this resonate.

This is not a typical college football path. From teaching himself the game to delivering in a pressure moment, Matsuzawa’s rise reflects a level of persistence that stands out even in a sport full of unlikely journeys.

And it is not just about one kick. It is about what it represents. A player who had never played football finding his way across the world, earning a roster spot and then delivering a game-winning moment on that stage.

That is what makes this story different. In a season filled with expectations, rankings and headlines, Matsuzawa’s journey is a reminder of what still makes college football special.
