There is no quarterback controversy for the Ole Miss Rebels.
But there is a real question behind it. If Austin Simmons is limited or unavailable, what can Ferris State transfer Trinidad Chambliss provide?
On Game Runs Deep, the discussion centered on Chambliss’ role and why there is more confidence in him than many might expect.
He is not just a backup. Chambliss was a sought-after transfer, with multiple SEC programs showing interest before he landed at Ole Miss. He brings experience, production and a skill set that fits the offense.
The biggest difference is style. Chambliss does not appear to offer the same arm talent as Simmons, but what he does provide is stability. In fall camp, he showed a stronger ability to protect the football, something that has been an issue for Simmons early in the season
With a deep group of playmakers and a strong run game, Ole Miss does not need the quarterback to carry the entire load. It needs someone who can operate the offense, avoid turnovers and keep drives on track. Chambliss can do that, and his background supports it.
At Ferris State, he produced as both a passer and runner, showing the ability to move the ball consistently even if it was not always explosive. As a junior in 2024, Chambliss threw for 2,925 yards and 26 touchdowns and rushed for 1,019 yards and 25 touchdowns, leading Ferris State to a Division II national championship.
Simmons remains the starter, and there is no indication that will change. But if injuries or turnovers become a bigger issue, Chambliss gives Ole Miss a viable option.
And that is something the Rebels did not necessarily have a year ago.
