As the College World Series Begins, College Baseball Has Never Been Bigger

College baseball has never felt bigger.

The crowds are larger. The television audiences are growing. National media outlets are paying attention. Programs are investing millions into facilities and resources. And for the first time in a long time, it feels like college baseball is breaking through from a niche sport into a mainstream conversation.

As the College World Series gets underway in Omaha, the sport finds itself in perhaps its strongest position ever, and according to College Baseball Central’s Micah Beutell, that’s not an accident.

“This is probably the most fun I’ve had covering a season,” Beutell said during an appearance on Talk of Champions.

From Cinderella stories and blueblood programs to packed stadiums and viral moments, the 2026 season has showcased everything that makes college baseball unique.

Investment Is Paying Off Across the Country

One of the biggest themes of this year’s NCAA Tournament has been the success of programs that have invested heavily in baseball. Schools such as Nebraska, Kansas and Troy have committed significant resources to facilities, coaching staffs and program development. The result has been some of the best seasons in program history. Nebraska hosted a regional, Kansas hosted both a regional and a super regional and Troy advanced to Omaha after one of the most impressive postseason runs in the country. For years, college baseball operated with a small group of traditional powers controlling much of the landscape. That is beginning to change.

“We’re starting to see programs that are investing in this sport getting the dividends rewarded to them,” Beutell said.

College Baseball Is Reaching New Audiences

The sport’s popularity is exploding. Beutell pointed to the increased national attention surrounding this year’s tournament as evidence. Media requests have surged. Social media engagement continues to grow. National personalities are paying attention. West Virginia’s run to Omaha, for example, generated enormous interest from fans and media alike, including coverage from personalities such as Mountaineer alum Pat McAfee.

According to Beutell, one West Virginia sports information director received nearly 200 media requests from more than 170 outlets following the Mountaineers’ regional victory.  Those numbers would have been almost unimaginable just a few years ago. Beutell points to the sports authenticity for the surge.

“It feels a lot more like the college sports we knew 10 or 15 years ago,” Beutell said.

In an era when college athletics often feels consumed by conference realignment, NIL negotiations and transfer portal drama, baseball has largely maintained its connection to fan bases and traditions.

Omaha Remains College Baseball’s Perfect Stage

No event captures that spirit better than the College World Series. For nearly two weeks every June, Omaha becomes the center of the college baseball universe. The city embraces the event unlike almost any championship host in American sports. Fans from across the country descend on Nebraska, creating an atmosphere that blends a national championship with a summer festival.

From the famous Jell-O Shot Challenge at Rocco’s Pizza to the historic Rosenblatt Stadium traditions that still live on throughout the city, Omaha remains one of the sport’s defining experiences. The result is a championship atmosphere that feels uniquely tied to college baseball, and for players, coaches and fans, that’s part of the appeal.

Why This Omaha Field Is So Interesting

This year’s College World Series field reflects the sport’s growing parity. Traditional powers remain, newcomers have arrived and programs from multiple conferences have legitimate championship aspirations. Beutell believes the bracket features a fascinating blend of established contenders and breakthrough stories.

Teams like Troy and West Virginia represent programs experiencing historic moments. Meanwhile, perennial contenders such as North Carolina, Texas, Georgia and Ole Miss arrive with championship expectations. The balance between those storylines is part of what makes the tournament compelling. No team enters Omaha without flaws, and no team arrives without belief.

Ole Miss Arrives as One of the Hottest Teams in the Country

Among the eight teams left standing, few have more momentum than Ole Miss. The Rebels advanced through both the Lincoln Regional and Auburn Super Regional without losing a game, winning five consecutive NCAA Tournament contests away from Oxford. Their path has required resilience, their postseason success has required contributions from every corner of the roster, and according to Beutell, the Rebels are one of the most dangerous teams remaining because of their ability to handle adversity.

The clutch hitting has been exceptional, the bullpen has developed into a strength, and the starting rotation, led by Hunter Elliott and Taylor Rabe gives Ole Miss a chance to win every game it plays.

“They always seem to find a way,” Beutell said.

That confidence extends throughout the roster. Players such as Tristan Bissetta, Judd Utermark, Hayden Federico and Will Furniss have delivered key moments throughout the postseason, helping transform Ole Miss from a dangerous team into a legitimate national championship contender.

A Sport on the Rise

Whether Ole Miss ultimately wins another national championship remains to be seen. The Rebels face a difficult path, but so does every team in Omaha. The bigger story may be what this season says about college baseball itself.

The crowds are growing, the investment is increasing, the national attention is expanding and the product on the field has never been better.
