GAME RUNS DEEP

Americans Have Finally Discovered Erling Haaland, and It’s Been One of My Favorite Sports Stories of the Summer

There are few stories I’ve enjoyed unfolding more this summer than watching Americans discover Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.

I personally experienced this during the 2006 FIFA World Cup with Brazilian legend Ronaldinho. I was just a kid growing up in the South, where college football was king and soccer barely registered on the sports calendar. Then the World Cup came around, Brazil took the field, and although Ronaldinho and the Brazilian “Magic Quartet” didn’t live up to the hype, his skill on the pitch was very evident

Four years later, Spain captivated the world with a style of soccer that felt more like art than competition. Now, in 2026, it’s Erling Haaland’s turn.

What’s made this World Cup so entertaining isn’t just Norway’s run. It’s watching people who have never cared about soccer suddenly become obsessed with the giant Norwegian striker.

I’ve had friends who couldn’t name five Premier League clubs texting me photoshopped recruiting graphics of Haaland committing to Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Miami. Others are trying to calculate what kind of NIL package Lane Kiffin would have to offer if Haaland wanted to spend one season playing college football.

It’s ridiculous, but it”s also completely understandable.

America Loves Freak Athletes

If there’s one thing Americans appreciate, it’s outrageous athleticism. This is a nation that has witnessed talented athletes like Bo Jackson, Calvin Johnson, LeBron James and Aaron Judge to name a few.

Athletes who make you stop and ask, “How is that even possible?” That’s exactly what Haaland does. He’s roughly 6-foot-5, weighs around 205 pounds and runs nearly 23 miles per hour. That’s not supposed to happen.

To American football fans, he doesn’t look like a soccer player. He looks like a five-star tight end every SEC coach wishes they could recruit. That’s why the memes have exploded. The joke isn’t really about soccer. It’s about imagining this physical specimen lining up between the hashes on a Saturday afternoon in the SEC.

Then You Meet the Person

Here’s where Haaland separates himself. Most athletes who look like comic book characters act like superheroes. Haaland acts like somebody’s goofy friend. You expect this intimidating Viking to be cold and serious. Instead, he’s shopping for cowboy boots in Texas, making jokes in interviews, and laughing at himself.

Watching Haaland’s World Cup content over the last few weeks has probably done as much for his popularity in America as anything he’s accomplished on the field. He’s one of the world’s biggest stars, yet he comes across as someone who’d happily grab a beer with fans after the match.

College Football Fans Already Understand Soccer Culture

I’ve noticed my friends who don’t watch international soccer in awe of the culture and passion displayed by fans of various countries in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Many of them are passionate college football fans, and I think they’re realizing they’ve loved this culture all along.

European soccer clubs are often compared to NFL franchises, but they’re closer to college football programs. Entire cities revolve around them, families pass fandom from generation to generation, the chants, the traditions, the drums and the rivalries.

The emotional investment is remarkably similar. That’s why I wasn’t surprised to see college football fans gravitate toward this World Cup. The cultures speak the same language.

America Didn’t Fall in Love With Soccer

It Fell in Love With Erling Haaland. There’s a difference. Americans aren’t suddenly watching because they understand tactical pressing systems. They’re watching because they found someone impossible to ignore.

A giant Viking who scores goals like they’re routine, a superstar who acts like he doesn’t realize he’s a superstar, someone who has embraced his time in America as enthusiastically as America has embraced him.
