DJ Shockley Talks NIL, Kirby Smart, Michael Vick and Georgia’s Championship Expectations

For nearly two decades, DJ Shockley has remained one of the most recognizable figures in Georgia football.

The former SEC Championship Game MVP, Atlanta Falcons quarterback, broadcaster and current FOX 5 Atlanta sports director has worn many hats since leaving Athens.

During a recent appearance on Game Runs Deep with Sudu Upadhyay, Shockley opened up about his journey from highly touted recruit to Georgia legend, while offering insight into today’s college football landscape.

How Much Would DJ Shockley Be Worth in the NIL Era?

One of the most intriguing discussions centered around NIL and how Shockley’s value would have translated to today’s game. Shockley arrived at Georgia as one of the nation’s top quarterback prospects and a true dual-threat quarterback long before that archetype became commonplace. Asked what his NIL valuation might have been if he were entering college today, Shockley didn’t hesitate.

“Easily $1 million the way they give it out now,” Shockley said.

The former Bulldogs quarterback pointed to the current market for elite quarterbacks, noting that players now routinely command multi-million-dollar deals before ever taking a collegiate snap. Still, while Shockley supports players being compensated, he expressed concern about the lack of structure surrounding NIL and the transfer portal.

“You shouldn’t go play for six schools,” Shockley said. “That’s crazy, and it’s teaching kids that, if it’s not ideal, get out of here. The real world ain’t going to work out like that.”

Shockley believes college athletics still needs guardrails that allow players to earn money while maintaining stability and development opportunities.

Choosing Patience Over the Transfer Portal

Shockley’s perspective carries added weight because his own college career unfolded much differently than what is common today. Despite arriving in Athens as one of the nation’s top quarterback recruits, Shockley spent years waiting behind Georgia record-setter David Greene.

In today’s era, many highly ranked quarterbacks would immediately enter the transfer portal after losing a starting battle, but Shockley stayed. He credits relationships, loyalty and a desire to prove himself at Georgia as the reasons he remained committed.

“I wanted to prove that I could do it at Georgia,” Shockley said. “I wanted to say they made an investment in me because they felt like I was good enough to be a quarterback at that place, and I wanted pay that off.”

The decision ultimately paid dividends. Shockley became Georgia’s starting quarterback in 2005, led the Bulldogs to an SEC Championship and earned MVP honors in the title game.

Learning from Mark Richt and Mike Bobo

Throughout the conversation, Shockley repeatedly credited former Georgia head coach Mark Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo for shaping both his football career and personal development. Shockley recalled that Bobo pushed him relentlessly as a quarterback.

“My first couple years, I thought he didn’t like me at all,” Shockley joked.

Over time, however, he came to understand that Bobo’s demanding coaching style was rooted in preparation and accountability.

“He made sure I was the smartest guy on the field every time we stepped on the field.”

What Makes Kirby Smart Different?

Today, Shockley remains heavily involved around the Georgia program through his broadcasting work, giving him a unique perspective on head coach Kirby Smart.

“Coach Richt was more of a calmer presence,” Shockley said. “But the demand was still there.”

For Smart, the intensity is impossible to miss.

“For Kirby, the presence of him yelling, everybody knows,” Shockley said. “He yells on their microphone. In practice, their practices are full tilt, they go hard.”

Despite the different styles, Shockley believes both coaches ultimately demand the same thing.

“They both expect excellence. They both expect you to go do what you’re here for and do your job.”

Shockley also defended Georgia’s approach to NIL, pointing to the program’s track record of player development.

“When you turn on the TV in late April and you hear Roger Goodell say, ‘So-and-so from the University of Georgia,’ that speaks volumes, right?” Shockley said.

The Michael Vick Experience

After Georgia, Shockley was selected by the Atlanta Falcons and found himself sharing a quarterback room with one of the most electrifying players the NFL has ever seen, Michael Vick. According to Shockley, Falcons coaches viewed him as a stylistic fit to Vick because of his athleticism.

“They felt like you’re just a right-handed version of him,” Shockley said. “You can move. You can throw. You’re athletic. You got the mind. Our offense won’t have to change if you come in.”

But even those comparisons didn’t prepare him for seeing Vick in person.

“I remember the first time I was going out to throw and it was just like,” Shockley said before pausing. “Man, that was crazy.”

A Legacy Built on Perseverance

When asked what accomplishment he’s most proud of outside of football statistics and accolades, Shockley pointed to something deeper.

“I think overcoming the obstacles to get to the point I am now,” Shockley said.

From waiting years for his opportunity at Georgia to overcoming injuries in the NFL and building a successful career in broadcasting, Shockley believes adversity shaped who he became. Looking back, he values the reputation he built as much as any accomplishment on the field.

“I think that’s something that I cherish, is that, you know, when people speak of me, they say, ‘You know what? He’s a good guy,'” Shockley said. “You know, he’s a guy that we can depend on. He’s a guy that, you know, given the opportunity, he’s going to make the most of it.”

For Shockley, that’s the legacy that matters most.
