Ole Miss came to Auburn with a simple objective.
Win Game 1.
Mission accomplished.
Behind another gritty outing from Hunter Elliott, timely hitting throughout the lineup and key bullpen contributions, the Rebels defeated Auburn 6-4 Friday night in front of the largest crowd in Auburn baseball history, moving within one victory of a return trip to the
College World Series.
With more than 10,600 fans packed into Plainsman Park, the atmosphere felt every bit like Omaha was on the line, and Ole Miss never flinched.
Hunter Elliott Delivers Another Postseason Performance
The box score won’t fully capture what Hunter Elliott meant to Ole Miss on Friday night. The veteran left-hander wasn’t necessarily dominant from start to finish, but he once again showed why he’s one of the most trusted postseason pitchers in program history.
“There are games where it looks like it’s not going to be his night,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said. “But he just makes pitches and gets off the field. He’s got as much guts as anybody that’s ever put on this uniform.”
Elliott battled through traffic, navigated pressure situations and handed the game off with Ole Miss in position to win. It was the type of performance that has defined much of his career in Oxford.
Brayden Randle Continues His Postseason Surge
At this point, it’s no longer a hot streak. It’s one of the best postseason runs in college baseball. Brayden Randle continued his remarkable surge at the plate, delivering two more hits and driving in two runs while helping spark the Rebel offense. The story becomes even more remarkable considering where Randle was just a few weeks ago. After losing his everyday role late in the season, Randle stayed ready and continued preparing for opportunities. Now he’s become one of Ole Miss’ most important players.
“It’s tough on anybody when you’re a starter and all of a sudden you’re not,” Bianco said. “But he’s done everything we’ve asked. In the biggest moments, his pulse is slow. He wants those moments.”
Randle’s versatility was also on display. The former infielder started in the outfield, a position he admitted he hadn’t played in a game since 14U baseball. None of it seemed to matter, as Randle kept producing.
Judd Utermark Goes Deep
Ole Miss’ biggest swing of the night belonged to Judd Utermark. The Rebel slugger launched a towering home run over Auburn’s famous Green Monster-style wall in left field, adding another huge moment to his postseason résumé.
“It felt good,” Utermark said afterward. “I knew I had to hit it high enough. It was just a matter of whether it was going to go the distance.”
It did, and it gave Ole Miss valuable breathing room against an Auburn team that spent the entire night threatening to make a comeback.
Bullpen Strategy Pays Off
Perhaps the most important development for Ole Miss wasn’t what happened Friday night. It was what didn’t happen. The Rebels won while preserving significant pitching resources for the remainder of the weekend. Hudson Calhoun entered in relief and delivered critical outs during the middle innings before Walker Hooks closed the game.
Bianco explained afterward that the Super Regional format changes how a coaching staff manages pitching.
Unlike a regional, where survival is the priority, a Super Regional requires balancing urgency with long-term planning.
“This becomes more like a three-game series,” Bianco said. “You’ve got to have enough to finish it.”
The strategy worked perfectly. Ole Miss secured the win while keeping much of its pitching staff available moving forward.
Auburn Isn’t Going Away
Despite the loss, Auburn head coach Butch Thompson made it clear he believes the Tigers remain very much alive.
“We’ll keep fighting,” Thompson said. “I thought we played really good baseball. They just paid off their opportunities a little bit more.”
Thompson also pointed to one potential silver lining. Auburn forced Ole Miss to use Walker Hooks late in the game, allowing Tiger hitters to get a look at one of the Rebels’ most important bullpen arms before the remainder of the series.
The Tigers now face elimination but have already shown throughout the postseason they can respond with their backs against the wall.
Everything Sets Up for Taylor Rabe
The biggest winner from Friday’s pitching plan may be Taylor Rabe. Ole Miss now heads into Game 2 with its hottest starter ready to take the ball.
Bianco confirmed after the game that Rabe will start Saturday as the Rebels attempt to punch their ticket to Omaha, qnd thanks to the efficient use of Elliott, Calhoun and Hooks, Ole Miss enters the game with most of its bullpen intact. It’s difficult to draw up a much better scenario.
One Win Away
The significance of Saturday cannot be overstated. One victory would send Ole Miss to the College World Series for the third time under Bianco and the second time in four seasons.
More importantly, it would continue a postseason run that is starting to feel increasingly familiar to Rebel fans. Like the 2022 national championship team, this group continues finding unlikely heroes, continues winning close games, and it continues looking remarkably comfortable in the biggest moments.
Now, Omaha sits one win away. The atmosphere in Auburn was electric Friday night. The stakes will be even bigger Saturday afternoon, and Ole Miss will take the field knowing it is nine innings away from another trip to college baseball’s biggest stage.
