Two Wins From Omaha: Ole Miss Embraces Super Regional Opportunity

Ole Miss is two wins away from a return trip to Omaha. After surviving one of the most dramatic weekends of the NCAA Tournament, the Rebels now turn their attention to Auburn and a best-of-three Super Regional matchup that will determine who advances to the College World Series.

The road won’t be easy. Plainsman Park is expected to be packed, Auburn enters the weekend with 40 wins, and both programs believe they have a legitimate shot at making a deep postseason run, but Ole Miss arrives in Auburn with momentum, confidence, and perhaps most importantly, a pitching staff that continues to find answers at the right time.

Rebels Survive Regional Test

Ole Miss was the only No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament to emerge from regional play with a 2-0 record. The Rebels defeated Arizona State in a dramatic 14-inning opener before closing out Nebraska to secure their first regional championship since the magical 2022 national championship season.

The weekend featured contributions from all over the roster. Brayden Randle hit .500 in Nebraska with five hits in ten at-bats. Hayden Federico continued his remarkable postseason surge, batting .500 with seven hits and three runs scored. Hunter Elliott added another milestone by becoming the first pitcher in program history to record three separate 100-strikeout seasons. Those performances helped push Ole Miss into its ninth Super Regional appearance in program history.

Mike Bianco Credits Complete Team Effort

For head coach Mike Bianco, the regional victory wasn’t simply about star power, but also depth.

“You need your stars to be stars,” Bianco said. “But you also need some other guys that maybe were in a different role that now have that star-like weekend.”

Several bullpen arms answered that challenge. The story of the weekend may have been relievers such as Will Libbert, who delivered critical innings at a time when Ole Miss desperately needed outs. Bianco repeatedly praised the bullpen’s effort in helping navigate a grueling postseason schedule. The veteran coach also pointed to one defining moment from the regional.

When Taylor Rabe entered a critical sixth-inning situation against Nebraska, Ole Miss needed its ace to respond. Rabe did exactly that, helping the Rebels maintain control of the tournament and putting them in position to advance.

Hunter Elliott Sets the Tone

If Ole Miss is going to win the Super Regional, the formula appears straightforward, it starts with Hunter Elliott.

Brad Logan noted throughout the Talk of Champions Super Regional Preview Show, that the Rebels’ clearest path to victory is jumping out to a 1-0 series lead behind Elliott before turning to Taylor Rabe in Game 2.

Elliott has already established himself as one of the most accomplished pitchers in program history, and Ole Miss will once again rely on him to set the tone against an Auburn lineup loaded with power. Behind Elliott, the bullpen suddenly looks far deeper than it did just a few weeks ago.

Bullpen Becoming a Strength

Few pitchers have emerged more during the postseason than Hudson Calhoun. The right-hander has become one of Ole Miss’ most trusted relief options and played a major role during the regional run. Calhoun said the coaching staff’s emphasis on routine and preparation helped the pitching staff remain calm despite the unique postseason schedule.

“It’s an opportunity. It’s not a danger. It’s not a threat at all,” Calhoun said of pitching in pressure situations. Walker Hooks has also become a valuable weapon. The talented left-hander showed he can provide multiple innings when needed and gives Ole Miss another power arm capable of changing a game. Hooks credited the team’s ability to remain even-keeled throughout the season, regardless of success or failure.

That mentality has helped the Rebels navigate the ups and downs of a long season and arrive in June playing their best baseball.

Dom Decker Embodies Ole Miss’ Identity

When discussing players who define this team, Bianco quickly pointed to Dom Decker. The statistics may not always jump off the page, but Decker’s value extends well beyond the box score. Bianco praised Decker’s versatility, defensive reliability, baseball IQ, and leadership.

“He’s just a really good baseball player,” Bianco said.

Whether it’s making plays defensively, moving runners, stealing bases, or delivering in key moments, Decker has become the type of player championship teams need during postseason play.

Auburn Presents Major Challenge

The Tigers enter the weekend with plenty of confidence of their own. Head coach Butch Thompson has built Auburn into one of the SEC’s most consistent programs, guiding the Tigers to their fifth Super Regional appearance since 2017.

Thompson’s evaluation of Ole Miss was simple.

“Power,” Thompson said. “Power legs, power bats, power fastballs, power stuff.”

Auburn features one of the league’s most balanced offenses, led by Chase Fralick, Ethin Bingaman, and Chris Rembert. Together, they provide a lineup capable of matching Ole Miss punch for punch.

The Tigers also possess one of the SEC’s strongest pitching staffs, which Bianco acknowledged as one of Auburn’s defining strengths.
