Veteran broadcaster Tim Brando didn’t hold back during a wide-ranging appearance on Talk of Champions, delivering a passionate defense of University of Mississippi while sharply criticizing comments made by former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin regarding race and the university’s history.
The interview, which also included stories from Brando’s years covering the Atlanta Braves during the 1990s, turned emotional when host Brad Logan brought up remarks from Kiffin tied to a recent Vanity Fair feature. Brando said he was especially disappointed because he had defended Kiffin publicly in the past.
“There is no defense for what he did in that article. No defense. None. Zero,” Brando said.
The longtime broadcaster referenced comments from Archie Manning supporting Ole Miss and praising the university’s growth over time. Brando echoed those sentiments, pointing to his family’s deep personal ties to Oxford, including his daughter attending Ole Miss and relationships with members of the Manning family.
Brando acknowledged the difficult racial history across the South, including in Mississippi, but argued that Ole Miss has spent decades actively changing and improving its culture.
“Every Southern state has a cross to bear with regard to some of the heinous activity that was taking place during that time,” Brando said. “But the awareness of the stereotype at Ole Miss has only made the circumstances for the student body there now far better than at other places.”
He credited university leadership and generational changes for transforming the campus environment over the years, noting that enrollment growth and a more diverse student culture reflect those efforts. Brando also criticized what he viewed as Kiffin’s motivation behind revisiting racial topics in the article.
“All that mattered to Lane was he wants to find some way to justify his narcissistic decision to abandon a team that was on the precipice of playing for a national championship,” Brando said.
According to Brando, Kiffin unnecessarily reignited old stereotypes that many within the Ole Miss community have worked hard to move beyond.
The conversation later expanded into broader issues across college football, including SEC leadership, NIL, conference politics and the future of the College Football Playoff. Brando predicted the playoff will eventually expand beyond 12 teams because of the growing financial demands facing athletic departments.
He also criticized recent rhetoric from SEC leadership surrounding Friday night football broadcasts and growing tensions between conferences.
Still, the heart of the interview remained centered on responsibility and leadership in college athletics.
“We need to unify. We don’t need to divide,” Brando said. “We don’t need this kind of rhetoric fanning the flames.”
Brando warned that inflammatory comments from influential figures can intensify already-heated rivalries and create unnecessary toxicity around college football programs and fan bases.
