Jared Ivey’s Mother Defends Ole Miss Experience Amid Lane Kiffin Controversy

A passionate conversation unfolded on Talk of Champions this week as hosts Ben Garrett and Brad Logan responded to comments attributed to former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin in a recent Vanity Fair article discussing race, recruiting and perceptions surrounding University of Mississippi.

At the center of the discussion was Tracey Ivey-Muhammad, mother of former Ole Miss defensive lineman Jared Ivey, who shared her own experiences in Oxford after initially having concerns about her son transferring to the school from Georgia Tech.

Ivey-Muhammad acknowledged that, like many Black families considering schools in the South, she initially had reservations about Mississippi because of the state’s history.

“Did I have concerns? It was Mississippi. Of course. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t,” Ivey-Muhammad said during the interview.

However, she emphasized that her family’s actual experience at Ole Miss was overwhelmingly positive.

“My experience at Ole Miss was lovely,” Ivey-Muhammad said. “Everybody was lovely. I miss my Ole Miss peeps.”

Ivey-Muhammad repeatedly stressed that while Mississippi, like many Southern states, still has work to do regarding civil rights and voting rights, she never personally experienced the type of hostility implied in the broader discussion surrounding Kiffin’s comments.

Garrett and Logan strongly criticized what they viewed as an unfair portrayal of Ole Miss and Oxford, arguing that the university has spent decades attempting to distance itself from parts of its troubled past. Logan pointed to changes the university has made over time, including banning Confederate flags on campus decades ago and modern efforts to foster inclusion.

Ivey-Muhammad also reflected on the relationships she built during her son’s three years in Oxford, describing friendships with other Ole Miss parents that she believes will last a lifetime.

“A little piece of my heart’s always going to be in Oxford,” Muhammad said.

Still, Ivey-Muhammad encouraged Ole Miss supporters not to become defensive when conversations about race and history arise. Instead, she urged future student-athletes to feel comfortable speaking openly about civic issues and social progress.

“They’re not just football players,” Ivey-Muhammad said. “If they want to use their voices for civic-minded things on campus, they should feel comfortable doing it.”

The discussion comes as anticipation already builds for LSU’s trip to Oxford this fall, a matchup that now carries even more emotional weight following Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss for Baton Rouge.
