No. 9 Texas A&M came to Oxford this weekend as one of the hottest teams in college baseball.
But on Friday night at Swayze Field, Ole Miss reminded everyone why late season baseball in Oxford remains one of the sport’s premier environments.
Behind a historic performance from Hunter Elliott and timely offense throughout the lineup, the Rebels earned a critical 5-3 win over the Aggies — a victory that could loom large in the NCAA Tournament hosting conversation.
“This was one they absolutely had to have,” Ben Garrett said during Talk of Champions, as Ole Miss improved to 13 SEC wins on the season.
Hunter Elliott Makes History
Elliott delivered one of the most important outings of his Ole Miss career Friday night. The veteran left-hander struck out 11 Texas A&M batters, tying a career high while becoming just the third pitcher in Ole Miss history to eclipse 300 career strikeouts alongside Lance Lynn and Drew Pomeranz. More importantly, he did it against one of the SEC’s most dangerous offenses after entering the game coming off a pair of difficult starts
“When they absolutely needed him the most, that was the Hunter Elliott Ole Miss fans were used to seeing,” Garrett said. Elliott’s emotional postgame reaction reflected what the moment meant — not only for the team’s postseason aspirations, but for a player who remains the final active member of Ole Miss’ 2022 national championship roster.
Rebels Win Without Relying on the Long Ball
One of the biggest takeaways from Friday’s victory was how Ole Miss won. Instead of depending on home runs, the Rebels manufactured offense with timely hits and productive at-bats throughout the lineup. Will Furniss delivered a key double and made a sensational defensive play late in the game, while Tristan Bissetta’s clutch base hit could signal a turning point after a recent slump.
“It was awesome to watch Ole Miss win a game without having to hit five home runs to score,” Garrett said during the show.
Brad Logan also pointed to the Rebels’ evolving offensive approach as a positive sign entering the postseason stretch.
“We saw Will Furniss get a big double, go with the pitch. We saw Bissetta with a big hit. We saw Judd Uttermark with a base hit that wasn’t a home run,” Logan said. “I think they’re kind of adapting here late in the year.”
Hosting Hopes Still Alive
With the win, Ole Miss kept itself firmly in the conversation to host an NCAA Regional for the second consecutive season. The consensus among the Talk of Champions crew was clear: reaching 16 SEC wins likely secures a hosting spot.
A series win over Texas A&M — or potentially a sweep — would dramatically strengthen the Rebels’ resume heading into the final week of conference play.
“If you sweep Texas A&M, man, I think one more win and you’re rock solid regardless of what happens in Hoover,” Garrett said.
Texas A&M entered the weekend ranked No. 12 nationally in RPI, while Ole Miss sat just behind at No. 13 — making every game this weekend critical for postseason positioning.
Swayze Field Buzzing During Graduation Weekend
The atmosphere around Oxford reflected the magnitude of the weekend. With graduation festivities filling the town, fans packed into Swayze Field and the Grove Collective tailgate area ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” Logan said live from the stadium. “People are starting to filter in. The folks that aren’t here at the Grove Collective tent, they’re headed into the stadium.”
The Grove Collective hosted members outside the ballpark while continuing to spotlight Ole Miss’ NIL efforts and upcoming fan events. Director of Development William Evans emphasized the growing impact of NIL support and fan involvement.
“In this day and age of NIL and college athletics, NIL is an important factor in recruiting student-athletes to come here,” Evans said. “I think all of them would tell you that the Grove Collective is the cream of the crop when it comes to recruiting premier athletes.”
Momentum Building at the Right Time
Ole Miss still has work to do. But Friday night looked like the version of the Rebels capable of making another postseason run. Elite pitching. Timely offense. A packed Swayze Field. And a veteran ace delivering in the biggest moment of the season. That combination keeps Ole Miss’ postseason hopes — and hosting aspirations — very much alive.
