The conversation around Nebraska true freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola has focused heavily on comparisons.
But his play is starting to speak for itself. Raiola is being overlooked as one of the better young quarterbacks in the country.
The production backs it up. Through the early part of the season, Raiola has led the Cornhuskers to a 3-1 record, throwing for 1,137 yards, and 11 touchdowns, with just one interception.
In the ‘Huskers 30-27 loss against No. 21 Michigan, Raiola handled pressure well and shook off an early interception to nearly upset the Wolverines. Even under duress, Raiola has shown poise, accuracy and the ability to manage the game. Those are traits that translate, regardless of system or opponent.
Raiola’s talent is not in question. As a former five-star recruit, Raiola came to Lincoln with high expectations. Early returns suggest there was a reason for that. If you were building a team right now, he would be near the top of the list among young quarterbacks to bring aboard.
But, Raiola’s success has been overshadowed by what some view as distractions. Much of the attention has centered on stylistic similarities to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, from mechanics to mannerisms. That has taken focus away from what he is actually doing on the field.
Raiola does not need to be compared to anyone else to stand out. His performance has already shown he can be a difference-maker on his own. If that continues, the narrative will shift.
