FOOTBALL

Is Texas A&M for real or is Notre Dame overrated?

The No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies keep winning, but the bigger question is what those wins actually mean.

After a dominant offensive showing against the previously No. 8 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the conversation on Game Runs Deep shifted to whether the Aggies are a true contender or if the Fighting Irish are being overvalued.

The production is hard to ignore. Texas A&M has scored more than 40 points in three straight games to start the season, including a road win in South Bend last Saturday.

Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed has been efficient, and the offense has shown explosive potential through the air.

Playmakers are emerging. Receivers like Mario Craver have produced at a high level, creating big plays and stretching defenses. That balance has made the Aggies one of the more dynamic offenses early in the season.

But the debate centers on context. Notre Dame is 0-2 and still ranked, coming in at No. 24 in this week’s Associated Press Poll, which raises questions about how much weight to put on that win. If the rankings are based on results, it becomes difficult to justify a win over a team that has not won a game.

Programs like Notre Dame often receive the benefit of the doubt in early rankings, even when the results do not fully support it. That creates a situation where wins can appear more impressive than they may actually be.

So where does that leave Texas A&M? The Aggies have done everything expected so far. They have won convincingly and handled their schedule. But the true test will come against stronger competition as the season progresses. For now, Texas A&M looks the part.

Whether that translates into long-term contention is still to be determined.
