Austin Simmons Struggles: Turnovers + Injury Concerns

The development of Austin Simmons remains one of the biggest storylines for the Ole Miss Rebels.

After a 30-23 win at Kentucky, the conversation on Game Runs Deep centered on both the growing pains and the adjustment happening around Simmons.

The mistakes are real. Simmons struggled with decision-making, particularly with interceptions that came from locking onto his first read and failing to go through progressions. At times, the reads were forced, leading to avoidable turnovers.

That is part of the process. As a first-time starter in the SEC, those moments are expected. Simmons showed flashes as well, including settling in after early mistakes and delivering key throws to keep drives alive.

But there is another factor. Simmons is also dealing with an ankle injury. It is not considered a high ankle sprain, but it is something to monitor. He returned to the game and remained effective as a runner, which suggests he is likely to play moving forward.

After the early interceptions, Ole Miss leaned heavily on the run game. With a deep group of backs and a breakout presence in the backfield, the offense has the ability to take pressure off Simmons.

Instead of relying on high-volume passing, Ole Miss can play a more balanced style. That approach allows Simmons to develop without forcing the offense through him on every drive.

There is no quarterback controversy. Simmons remains the starter, and there is no indication that will change. But if turnovers continue to be an issue, the conversation around how the offense operates could evolve.

For now, the path is clear. Limit mistakes, lean on the run game and let the quarterback grow into the role.

If that happens, Ole Miss has the pieces to stay in the conversation all season.
