South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown might not be a household name yet, but that could change quickly.
On Game Runs Deep, Brown’s performance in the Bulls 34-7 win over Boise State, stood out as one of the most impressive individual showings of week one.
At around 230 pounds, Brown combines arm strength with a physical running style that is rare at the position. He does not avoid contact. He seeks it. On multiple runs, he broke tackles, lowered his shoulder and created yards in a way that looked more like a power running back than a quarterback.
That is what makes Brown dangerous. There were flashes in the passing game as well, including a clean throw in stride that showed his ability to deliver downfield. When everything is working, he has the tools to take over a game.
The question is the supporting cast. Outside of Chaz Nimrod, there are still unknowns around him, which could limit how far South Florida can go, but Brown alone gives this offense a chance to stay competitive, and that matters heading into a week two matchup against Florida.
South Florida may not be expected to pull off the upset, but if this game is closer than expected, it will likely be because of Brown. His ability to extend plays and create offense on his own makes him the kind of player who can keep his team in it.
He may not be getting national attention yet, but performances like this suggest that could be coming soon.
