It was a strong debut for Austin Simmons, but also a reminder that development is still part of the process.

Simmons went 20 of 31 for 340 yards and three touchdowns, showing flashes of why Lane Kiffin has so much confidence in him. When the offense was in rhythm, he looked comfortable, accurate, and capable of making high-level throws, including a deep ball down the sideline that showcased his upside.
But the learning moments were there too. He threw two interceptions, including one that highlighted a key developmental concern with recognizing coverage, something that had shown up during fall camp. There were also stretches where he struggled once plays broke down, holding onto reads a bit too long or failing to adjust on the fly. That is the reality for a 19-year-old making his first start.
The encouraging part is that the foundation is clearly there. The arm talent, accuracy, and ability to push the ball downfield all showed up. The areas that need improvement are the ones you expect at this stage, and that is where the confidence comes in.
With Kiffin guiding his development, there is belief those mistakes will get cleaned up over time. The tools are there for Simmons to grow into something much bigger.
Week 1 did not define him, but it showed exactly why Ole Miss believes he can be the future in Oxford.
